Simple joys in life: new books by favorite authors.

I had a self-imposed book ban for 2011, promising myself not to buy books if they won’t be on sale (20% off at the very least) and while I didn’t break that promise, I still feel a little bit bad that I hauled books again only a few days along 2011. But a) it’s not my fault that I stumbled upon a sale, and b) these are on my to buy list. I also told myself that I shouldn’t buy books that are not on that list. Just saying.
Also, it might be the first time after a really, really long time that I didn’t have a YA book along with what I bought. I hope these will prove to be awesome reads.

What I love about the Ruby Oliver Books
  1. The neuroticism.
  2. The movie references.
  3. The boys who write notes.
  4. The lists.
  5. The insights.
  6. The delicious wit.
  7. The funny bones.
  8. The footnotes.
  9. The Ruby Oliver dictionary: her meaning of words/phrases. Pod-robot. Mocha Latte. Reginald. Spankin’. Rabbit fever.
  10. The books themselves.

So I devoured the 3 books in just a few days (I immediately bought the third one called The Treasure Map of Boys after reading the second one, The Boy Book) and I can’t wait to get my hands on the fourth one. I haven’t seen a copy of it anywhere but I’m truly hoping a copy is lying somewhere around Manila already. It has yet to be released on December! The books are light and lovely and funny and they make me think about my own relationships and my own life in general and how I mess things up from time to time and what I can do to make things better and how I should get a move on and start acting and stop being passive.

Never-ending ands because Ruby Oliver just gave me my caffeine fix that is very much uncalled-for as it is already 1 AM.

“In life, maybe you do eventually find love, but it’s not with your high school boyfriend. It’s with a completely different person whom you never even met before - someone who didn’t figure into the first part of the story at all. In life, there’s no happily-ever-after-into-the-sunset. There’s a marriage, complete with arguments, bad hair, lost hair, mentally unstable children, weird diets, dogs that fur up the couch, not enough money.” —E. Lockhart - The Treasure Map of Boys
“Let me be honest back, then, she said. You don’t know how it is to like someone for a long time. To keep thinking he might like you back, and thinking he might like you back, and never being sure. Every day you think something might happen. Every day you tell yourself, probably not - but maybe. And then every day it doesn’t. It’s hard.” —E. Lockhart - The Treasure Map of Boys
“There’s something about seeing a guy’s feelings written down, something about him taking that risk and committing his heart to paper, that means so much more than anything he could just say.” —E. Lockhart, The Treasure Map of Boys
“I don’t think that I am wasting my time. Perhaps this is how you know you’re doing the thing you’re intended to: No matter how slow or slight your progress, you never feel that it’s a waste of time.” —Curtis Sittenfield, The Man of My Dreams
Who will get the books from the Book Giveaway

The book contest I joined didn’t go well for me because the others who joined were “like” monsters. Their likes multiplied faster than I thought possible so it was so easy for me to get left behind. I did try my best though. I really wanted it. So anyway, 2 people get books from me. And I’m announcing early: now.

I used Random.org so I didn’t cheat, haha! Let’s make this short. I’m giving

Sorry to those who wanted the books. I’d give you all if I could. :( Thanks for helping me out!

Book Giveaway: Looking for Alaska and The Demigod Files

Hello everyone! So I’m giving away Looking for Alaska and The Demigod Files. Here’s how it goes:

I have been asking favors here and there for the past 3 days because I joined an online contest that could get me 5,000 Pesos worth of books for free. I can only win if I get the most number of “likes”. I never wanted to be a source of irritation for anybody so I hope that this favor, which is after all worth only a few clicks, isn’t asking for too much. I couldn’t help it. I have such a huge space in my heart for books and it’s been carved all the way back, since I was born. It’s always been there. I said some things about that in my first post related to the contest.

A lot of people have been very supportive, and in some ways, I am deeply touched but mostly I’m just truly grateful. To everyone who showed support so far, just by clicking some links, I really would like to thank you. It really means a lot to me. And what I’m about to say later on, is partly for showing thanks.

However, I’m running far behind. I’m in the middle of the race right now. There’s a slight chance I can still win, but I won’t really be getting anywhere at the rate I’m going. So now, I’m appealing to your motivation and withdrawing from my gratitude.

I would like to ask those who haven’t “liked” my post yet to please “like” this fan page of Powerbooks first and “like” this picture of me with my bookshelf. If you could get your closest friends, little siblings, or other people to do the same, I would really appreciate it. Like what I’ve been saying for the past few days, consider this your good deed for the day.

In return, I’m officially opening my own personal book giveaway partly for motivation and partly for gratitude. I have some extra books I would gladly give away for free.

Details:

  1. This is open for residents of the U.S.A. and Philippines only.
  2. Only those with Facebook can join.
  3. You can join as many times as you like. If you have other Facebook accounts, you can “like” the post with those other accounts too.
  4. Winners will be randomly selected. I’ll probably attach numbers to your names and get an online number generator to pick out the winning numbers.
  5. There will be at least 2 winners. I’m still contemplating if I could have 3 winners, but 2 I’m sure of.
  6. Winners will get either Rick Riordan’s The Demigod Filesor John Green’s Looking for Alaska (this one’s quite hard to find in Manila).

  1. Deadline: MAY 30, 2010

What you need to do:

  1. Just do that thing within the blockquote. Like this and this and ask people to do the same. As simple as that.
  2. Doing that earns you 1 entry. Reblogging this post gets you 2 entries. If you “like” and reblog, you get 3 entries.
  3. After you’ve done that, for me to know that you’re joining this, please reply to this post or e-mail me at stuckinatrafficjam@gmail.com with your Facebook name (if you used several accounts, state all the names), e-mail address, and what you did (did you just like it, just reblog it, or do both).
  4. For questions, you can e-mail me or ask me here.
  5. Just that. I hope you’ll join! I really hope I could win and those books need new homes. :)

PS. If you’re not interested in the books, maybe you could just do it anyway for the sake of randomly helping someone out, or you could let your friends who love books know about this giveaway thing by telling them or reblogging this post.

I love books and I’m really hopeful right now. I hope you could help me, and I hope you get a book if you like it. Thank you so much! :)

Yay! Let’s all be happy and jolly! Please?

I find it interesting when I come across international books/short stories using Filipino characters (as long as it’s not meant in an offensive way). And I must say, The Best American Non-required Reading likes it too. I just finished reading the 2008 edition and I’ve already read the 2007 one. In 2007, there was one story with a Filipino character. In 2008, there were three stories.

Anyway, I know it’s useless info but I just felt like sharing that.
